Understanding ERS Coherence over Urban Areas

چکیده
C-band SAR interferometry has been widely used for several Earth related studies (topography, volcanology, forestry etc.). Nevertheless, not much attention has been paid to urban areas and coherence has been used for classification purposes only. In this study we focused on the meaning of coherence of an urban area and performed several analysis in order to understand what causes decorrelation. Two test sites have been considered: Gothenburg in Sweden and Naples in Italy. For both cities we had a reasonable number of coherence images with one-day and long-period acquisition interval. SAR amplitude images have also been considered. Using RGB colour composite combinations of SAR and InSAR imagery, we could relate the level of coherence of a part of a city either to topography, InSAR system geometry and position of the targets or to image processing or to structural typologies.

Inflation of the Aira Caldera (Japan) detected over Kokubu urban area using SAR interferometry ERS data
Nine ERS-1 and ERS-2 descending orbit data acquired over Aira Caldera between June 1995 and November 1998 were used to create 36 differential interferograms. Although the interferograms exhibit a relatively low level of coherence, even for couples sampling short time intervals (6 months), Synthetique Aperture Radar (SAR) observations reveal a distinct range change pattern over Kokubu urban area...
متن کاملMapping Urban Extent Using Satellite Radar Interferometry
Phase coherence between pairs of ERS SAR images is investigated as a method for mapping urban extent in South Wales, United Kingdom. Separability indices show that image pairs with time delays of greater than 2 months and baseline separations of less than 300 m can discriminate effectively between urban and non-urban land. Classification kappa coefficients greater than 90 percent are achieved, ...

The Permanent Scatterers (PS) technique, developed by the authors during the last three years, allows the identification of radar targets particularly suitable for SAR interferometric measurements. In fact, despite its remarkable potential, spaceborne SAR Differential Interferometry (DInSAR) has not been fully exploited as a reference tool for ground deformation monitoring, due to the presence ...
متن کاملUrban Change Detection Using Coherence and Intensity Characteristics of Multi-temporal ERS-1/2 Imagery
In this paper, the potential of multitemporal ERS-1/2 InSAR data for detecting urban land-cover changes is investigated on a test area within Shanghai city, China. A new unsupervised change-detection approach is proposed, which is characterized by the combined use of two temporal variations based on backscattering intensity and long-term coherence from multitemporal ERS-1/2 SAR images. The prop...

ABSTRACT: The author compared the capability of coherence information obtained from interferometric SAR (InSAR) by C-band SAR of ERS-1 and 2 and by L-band SAR of JERS-1 for the purpose of monitoring the changes of tropical rain forest due to deforestation. The test site was a southern part of Sumatra Island with 50 by 50 kilometers coverage. The several repeat-pass interferometric data pairs by...
